You have to imagine that: Wine has been grown in Brixen since 1142. Today, 881 years later, we are sitting in the September sun in front of the Hotel Pacher and want to know from junior manager Michael Huber: What exactly is this much-quoted "gift of the gods" like?
Hoila Michael, red or white?
"White! The Eisack Valley is dominated by white wine varieties, 90 percent of all vines here are white."
While we're in the middle of the subject: What wines grow around Brixen?
"Right on our doorstep, behind the hotel and just around the corner, grows Kerner, Sylvaner, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. There is also Gewürztraminer and Pinot Grigio in Brixen. For those interested in vinology, there is a lot going on here in Neustift, Vahrn and Brixen, our winegrowers are very innovative and courageous. There are already great Riserva lines, special Cuvées and also new grape varieties like Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon. In a few days, the first sparkling wine made according to the classic method will also be launched."
The Valle Isarco is considered the northernmost wine-growing region in Italy. Why do the vines thrive so well despite this?
"It actually has to do with Lake Garda. The winds from there blow right up to us and give us a special climate. This has been the case for a very long time, by the way."
What do you mean?
"With the founding of the Neustift monastery in 1143, there is also evidence that wine was grown here in the area. You have to imagine that, not much longer and it's 900 years! That makes the Neustift monastery one of the oldest active wineries in the world. If you love wine, it's very special to walk on such historic ground."
You grew up here in Neustift near Brixen. Is wine in your blood?
"That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but we Hubers already have a strong affinity for wine in general and are big fans of the vintners in the neighbourhood. And: 2 of us 4 Huber children have trained as sommeliers."
So you really blossom at Hotel Pacher in autumn?
"Absolutely! It's almost kitschy beautiful now and the temperatures are perfect for extended rambles through the wine village of Neustift. We also love to send our guests on the apple-wine trail, Törggelesteig and chestnut trail directly from the hotel."
What is your personal highlight in the wine autumn around Brixen?
"I am particularly looking forward to the new wine. It is a special experience to stop by the neighbouring winegrowers, open a barrel and toast to this special spot of land. Because it's not just the wine that's doing well here, but also the people."
There's nothing more we can add to that! Thank you for your time, Michael!
